The drive won't read discs, but the diagnostic says the drive is ok, and the driver is up to date. Normally, when you try to explore or view the CD contents, Windows Explorer freezes up until the drive quits trying.

It did, but I never got the "Your New Hardware rsdvd Ready to Use" dialog--I guess it only does that if it automatically installs a driver?

I think the prob is with the lens of your drive. Dell Inspiron Notebook.

When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem dtt to resemble a nail. I took it apart and put it back together and cleaned the lens, and upgraded the firmware, but it is still the same I assume this is a bad registry or the software running the drive.
